Silhouette facing a glowing gate: unlearning limiting beliefs

The starting point

Why willpower is not enough

“The Gate”, 65 seconds. The whispered voice is in French, with English subtitles. Watch with the sound on.
“As human beings we usually spend (at best) only 5% of our time in our conscious mind, and the other 95% in our subconscious mind.”
Bruce Lipton, cell biologistbrucelipton.com
“About 95 percent of who we are by midlife is a series of subconscious programs that have become automatic.”
Joe DispenzaBreaking the Habit of Being Yourself

Most of your decisions, reactions and habits run on autopilot. You think you're choosing. In reality, programs installed before you turned seven are deciding for you. That's why your resolutions fail: your conscious mind wants one thing, your subconscious mind does another.

The inner cascade

01

Your beliefs

generate your thoughts.

“I am enough”

02

Your thoughts

dictate your emotions and your actions.

“I have the right to be loved just as I am.”

03

Your actions

shape your behaviour.

I say what I feel, I suggest things, I dare to ask.

04

Your behaviour

defines who you are, and the reality you live in.

My relationships become more real, and I feel like I belong.

Change the root (your beliefs) and everything else falls into place.

That's exactly what HypnoSelf makes possible, in four steps and with no effort on your part.

How it works

4 steps to transformation

  1. 01

    Talk

Explore your thoughts with an AI specialised in guided introspection, inspired by CBT.

A woman sitting cross-legged on her sofa, smiling, typing on her phone.
  2. 02

    Record

Create tailor-made affirmations and record them in your own voice.

A woman with her eyes closed holds her phone to her mouth and records her voice.
  3. 03

    Listen

In the evening as you fall asleep or in the morning as you wake up, the moments Murphy and Dispenza recommend. Can you hypnotise yourself? Yes, and that's exactly what self-hypnosis is, in your own words and your own voice.

A woman asleep in bed, one earbud in her ear, in the blue light of night.
  4. 04

    Transform

Gradually unlearn your limiting beliefs, day after day.

Your own topic

A specific situation, a relationship, a project, a loss, a transition… Describe what you are going through in your own words; the AI adapts to your story.

These sentences come from a list of 124 beliefs, sorted by theme and by root fear:the full list of limiting beliefs.

Why it works

Four pillars, one lasting transformation

AI inspired by CBT

An AI that talks about your real life

Inspired by cognitive behavioural therapy, the AI talks with you, pins down your specific limiting beliefs and writes affirmations rooted in your own experience, never generic sentences. This is what we mean by AI hypnosis: a conversation first, then affirmations in your own words.

  1. You tell the AI your story

“With my partner, I can't bring myself to say how I feel. Deep down, I tell myself I'm not enough.”

  2. The AI spots the belief holding you back

    “I'm not enough”

  3. It writes your affirmations, in your own words

    “You are enough.”

“With my partner, I'm learning to say how I feel.”

Alpha and theta waves

The right moment, on the edge of sleep

As you fall asleep, your brain leaves beta waves (alertness) and slides into alpha (relaxation) then theta (drowsiness); as you wake up, it travels back through that same window. It is the moment Murphy and Dispenza recommend for speaking to your subconscious mind, and research shows that this threshold of sleep is a state of its own for the mind.

  1. Alertness Beta 14 to 30 Hz
  2. Relaxation Alpha 8 to 13 Hz
  3. Drowsiness Theta 4 to 8 Hz

When your ritual plays, between relaxation and drowsiness

Forrin & MacLeod, 2017

Your own voice, your inner monologue

You record your sentences in your own voice. What you say out loud is remembered better than what you read, and one study shows that we remember what we hear again in our own voice better than in someone else's. Your sentences become your inner monologue, in your words and your voice.

What we remember best

  1. What you say out loud
  2. Then what you hear played back in your own voice
  3. Then what another voice reads to you
66 days, Lally 2010

Consistency that builds the habit

Every evening, you hear the same sentences again: they become familiar, and the ritual becomes a habit. It usually takes around two months for a daily action to become automatic (66 days in Lally's 2010 study).

The books that shaped HypnoSelf

Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude

Napoleon Hill & W. Clement Stone

Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude

What this book offers

Hill and his co-author Stone propose that mental attitude can be learned, and that you change it through short phrases repeated often. Our daily appointment comes from this book, along with the idea that repetition builds the habit. Their phrases are meant to be learned by heart; you write yours with us, and listen to them evening after evening.

The author

Napoleon Hill, American author (1883-1970). On Andrew Carnegie's advice, he spent twenty years interviewing the industrialists of his day, to understand what sets those who succeed apart from the rest. From this came Think and Grow Rich, published in 1937, one of the world's best-selling self-help books and a founding text of the genre. It inspired W. Clement Stone, with whom he published Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude in 1960.

The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

Dr Joseph Murphy

The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

What this book offers

Murphy argues that the best time to speak to your subconscious is as you fall asleep, or as you wake, and that the subconscious accepts whatever the conscious mind holds to be true. He suggests repeating a short sentence in the present tense, slowly, like a lullaby. He is the reason we placed your ritual at bedtime, with short sentences, and you can also listen to it in the morning.

The author

An Irish-born minister and author (1898-1981), he led a Divine Science church in Los Angeles that would later bear his name. He devoted his ministry and more than thirty books to making one idea accessible: the subconscious mind is shaped by what it is told over and over. The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, published in 1963, became an instant best-seller that sold millions of copies, and still reads like a practical manual.

The Biology of Belief

Dr Bruce Lipton

The Biology of Belief

What this book offers

Lipton argues that our beliefs, true or false, have more influence on our biology than our genes do, and that a positive affirmation fails when it contradicts a program installed in childhood. This book gave HypnoSelf its initial spark: the idea that working on your beliefs takes more than an intellectual exercise. From it came a conversation before you write a single sentence, to heed his warning, then listening in a relaxed state.

The author

American cell biologist. He taught anatomy at the University of Wisconsin's medical school, then at St George's University in the Caribbean, before doing research at Stanford University School of Medicine. His years in the laboratory led him to the conviction he sets out in this book: that a cell is steered by its membrane, more than by its DNA, in response to what it perceives in its environment.

The Brain That Changes Itself

Dr Norman Doidge

The Brain That Changes Itself

What this book offers

Doidge recounts how the brain changes its structure with activity, thought and experience, including in adulthood. He also describes the flip side, which he calls the plastic paradox: the same flexibility can make us more rigid, and some of our most stubborn habits are its product. That is why we offer a regular ritual, focused on what you want to experience: if what you repeat leaves its mark anyway, you might as well choose what to repeat.

The author

Canadian psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. For thirty years he was on the faculty of the University of Toronto's Department of Psychiatry and on the research faculty of the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. This book, published in 2007, introduced neuroplasticity to the general public: it describes the work of the neuroscientists who brought it to light, and tells the often remarkable stories of patients, theirs and his own.

The Spontaneous Healing of Belief

Gregg Braden

The Spontaneous Healing of Belief

What this book offers

Braden proposes that most of the beliefs that limit us are subconscious, and take hold early, when we absorb the beliefs of the people around us. To change one, he suggests naming it, putting its opposite into words, then gathering facts from your own life that support what you are aiming for. His method inspired our conversation: saying in your own words what holds you back, then looking for the sentence that replaces it for you.

The author

An American who started out as a geologist at Phillips Petroleum, he went on to design computer systems in aerospace at Martin Marietta, then worked at Cisco Systems before devoting himself to writing and speaking. For more than twenty years, he visited monasteries and combed through ancient texts to set them alongside contemporary science. Out of this came the question this book asks: what is the role of belief in our world? For him, belief is the program that shapes reality itself.

Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself

Joe Dispenza

Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself

What this book offers

Dispenza sets out a two-step way to change: become aware of your automatic patterns (the thoughts you keep repeating, the emotions your body has memorised), then install something else through daily practice. Our approach follows this order, with the conversation first, which brings your automatic patterns to the surface, then listening every day. This book also gave us the idea of recording your sentences in your own voice, and we made it the heart of the app.

The author

American chiropractor, also trained in neuroscience. He studied hypnosis in 1981, then went on to teach it. He says that at 23 he was knocked off his bike during a triathlon, refused to have his six fractured vertebrae operated on, and visualised his spine being rebuilt every day until he could walk again. Today he runs meditation seminars and, in this book, likens meditation to hypnosis.

You Are the Placebo

Joe Dispenza

You Are the Placebo

What this book offers

Dispenza takes the placebo effect as his starting point and asks: if the body responds to what we expect from a treatment, can we learn to produce that response ourselves, without a pill? He argues that a thought repeated every day ends up conditioning the body, and that a strong emotion speeds up the change. We owe him sentences worded to be felt, and a ritual you practise knowing what it is, like a placebo you know you are taking: your sentences are spoken plainly, with nothing hidden, and you are the one who chose them.

The author

An American chiropractor with a passion for neuroscience, he now teaches meditation in his seminars. Early in this book, he tells the story of his own accident: at 23, he was hit by a car during the cycling leg of a triathlon, refused the surgery he was offered for his six fractured vertebrae and spent his days mentally rebuilding his spine, one image at a time. He then promised himself that if he walked again, he would devote his life to research on the link between mind and body. Nine and a half weeks after the accident, he was walking again.

Frequently asked questions

What you want to know before you start

How does self-hypnosis work?

Self-hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation in which your conscious mind goes quiet, so positive suggestions can reach your subconscious mind directly. By listening to your own affirmations in this receptive state, you gradually unlearn your limiting beliefs and build new thought patterns in line with your goals.

I've already tried affirmations, they don't work for me. Why would this be different?

Affirmations read during the day stay on the surface. Here, they're written for your situation, from what you share, spoken in your own voice and heard every night. You didn't fail: you made trails that nobody kept up.

Why use my own voice?

Your brain recognises your own voice as the most authentic and trustworthy voice there is: it is the voice of your inner monologue, the one you hear every day. In self-hypnosis, your own voice creates a direct connection between your conscious and subconscious mind, which makes your affirmations far more powerful than they would be in someone else's voice. You become your own guide.

I hate hearing my own voice.

That's very common, and it passes quickly: you get used to it within a few nights, especially with a soundscape behind your voice. That's exactly the voice your mind listens to all day long.

Can an AI really understand my situation?

The conversation starts from what you share, in your own words, and digs deeper with you until it reaches the belief holding you back. You read your affirmations before you even give your card: you judge for yourself.

How long before I see results?

The first subtle changes often show up within 7 to 14 days of daily practice: more positive thoughts, different reactions, a calmer state of mind. Deeper, more lasting change usually takes 21 to 66 days of repetition, the time your brain needs to build new neural circuits. Consistency beats intensity: 10 minutes a day does more for you than 2 hours once a week.

When is the best time to practise?

The best times are on waking, as your mind emerges from deep rest, and before you fall asleep, as you naturally begin to relax. In these transitional states, your subconscious mind is more receptive to new suggestions. The key is to make the practice a daily ritual.

I don't have time, and I never stick with things.

The ritual takes a few minutes, in bed, as you fall asleep. Reminders and streaks help you keep the rhythm. No willpower needed: it happens while you drift off.

Is self-hypnosis safe?

For the vast majority of people, yes: you stay conscious and in control, you can stop at any time, and you decide what your affirmations say. There is one important caveat: if you have a psychological, psychiatric or neurological disorder, heart problems, epilepsy or any condition that could be affected by deep relaxation, ask a healthcare professional for advice before using HypnoSelf. HypnoSelf is not a medical device and is not a substitute for professional care.

I already meditate or work with someone. Is it compatible?

Yes. HypnoSelf adds to it in a few minutes at bedtime, and every night you feed the work you do elsewhere.

What happens if I miss a day?

Missing a day does not undo your progress: the connections you have built stay in place. Simply pick up where you left off the next day, and don't feel guilty about it. Try not to skip more than 2 or 3 days in a row during the first few weeks, while the new patterns are still forming.

Is my data secure and private?

Yes. Your affirmations, your conversations and your recordings are encrypted with a key derived from your password: nobody but you can read them, not even the HypnoSelf team. If you forget your password, the recovery key you received when you signed up lets you get your data back; without that key, your data stays unreadable.

How much does HypnoSelf cost?

The first 7 days are free, with no commitment, and the conversation, creating your affirmations and recording them don't even require a card. Plans and prices are detailed on the Pricing page, and shown again in the app before any payment. You can cancel at any time.

There's plenty of free hypnosis on YouTube. Why pay?

On YouTube, you hear someone else's voice, with phrases written for everyone. Here, it's your words and your voice, about your situation. And you can try it for 7 days without paying anything.

How do I unsubscribe?

Whenever you want, free of charge: from Profile > Subscription in the app, from the Cancel my subscription page linked at the bottom of every page of the site, or by email. During the trial, nothing is charged if you stop before it ends; after that, you keep access until the end of the paid period.

End-to-end encryption

Your deepest thoughts stay yours. Your affirmations, your ritual summaries and your recordings are encrypted on your device, with a key that only you hold.
